The Restoration and the July Monarchy

Building and interior decoration continued apace. Faithful to the spirit of the age, these modifications contributed to the Château de Fontainebleau’s status as a unique architectural and historical record.

Under the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X, the court spent little time at Fontainebleau. Consequently, the changes made during this time are scarcely visible today, with the exception of the décor in the Galerie de Diane.

Under Louis-Philippe, extensive restoration and conversions changed the interior appearance considerably. The wedding of the Duke of Orléans, (oldest son of Louis-Philippe I) and Princess Helen of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, held at Fontainebleau on 30 May 1837, marked a significant end to these overall restorations.
